According to the changelog for AltServer 1.4.9 Compatibility iOS 15.5, this version includes a critical remedy for a crashing issue for iOS or iPadOS 13 or older devices.

While those on iOS or iPadOS 14 or 15 can update to the current version of AltStore using the app’s integrated “Update” button, the AltStore team strongly advises those on iOS or iPadOS 13 or older to re-sideload the latest version of AltStore using AltSever.

One of the reasons why ipsw.me suggests that all current iOS 15.5 and macOS Monterey 12.4 users update to the updated version as soon as feasible is that the revised version should deliver a better user experience with fewer unexpected program crashes once installed.

There is currently no update for the computer-based AltServer program because today’s patch only affects the handset-based AltStore software.

Many jailbreakers use AltStore to sideload jailbreak programs such as Odyssey, Taurine, and unc0ver, but it’s also popular among people who want to sideload their own. IPA files are used to get around the App Store’s often crippling limitations. Modified programs, unregistered apps, and even game emulators are frequently used.
