Repairing your face ID is about to get a lot easier.
In an internal memo to staff, Apple announced the move. The authorized service personnel will have access to a new “TrueDepth Camera service part,” which includes the Face ID and front camera modules. Service providers will be able to do “same-unit repairs” for Face ID difficulties using this component.
This implies that if your iPhone XS or newer’s solution to repair Face ID module breaks, Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers can now replace just that module without having to replace the entire iPhone. This is a significant shift, as previously, failures of the Face ID module necessitated a complete device replacement.
This update comes after Apple announced last year that the rear glass of some iPhone 12 models may be repaired rather than having to replace the entire handset.
In terms of the environment, Apple’s ability to adopt a more modular approach to repairs means it produces significantly less waste than when it needs to replace a whole device due to a single component failure. It also means that customers will not lose any data or be forced to set up a new iPhone as a result of a single failure.
There’s no news on when Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers will start using the new solution to repair Face ID process. Technicians are being told that paperwork and training for this technique “will be made available at a later date” by the corporation.
